My Dissertation
The Disengagement of Black High School Students in English Language Arts Classrooms
This qualitative study explores how four veteran high school ELA teachers in the southeastern U.S. understand and respond to Black students’ disengagement. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, teachers identified drivers such as culturally irrelevant curriculum, deficit assumptions, early academic gaps, and disengagement that often shows up as quiet resistance. Technology emerged as both barrier and bridge. Across five research questions, ten themes pointed to the power of relationships, culturally responsive adaptation, teacher emotional regulation, and intentionally safe classrooms. The study centers teacher voice and offers practical implications for professional learning, curriculum reform, teacher preparation, and school leadership aimed at building inclusive, student-centered ELA environments.

The Classroom Every Child Deserves
